Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic brain injury, or TBI, occurs when the brain receives sudden trauma, such as from a violent blow to the head or a gunshot wound. Millions of Americans suffer from temporary or permanent effects of TBI. Falls, auto accidents and assaults lead the list of causes.

Depending on the extent of brain damage, TBI symptoms may be mild to severe and include:

  • Unconsciousness or concussion
  • Headache, nausea, vomiting
  • Confusion and fatigue
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Blurred vision, pupil dilation
  • Seizures
  • Cognitive difficulties
  • Mood changes
  • Weakness, numbness, lack of coordination
  • Coma and death

Immediate medical attention, including surgery, may be required to prevent further brain damage after traumatic injury. Additionally, many TBI patients require rehabilitation and other treatments to recover from their injuries. In some cases, the effects of TBI are permanently disabling, impacting entire families for a lifetime.
