New Motorcycle Laws Say “Safety, Not Style”

According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, two is better than one, and not only better, but required. As of October 1, 2008, all motorcycles and mopeds had to maintain two wheels on the ground at all times while being driven. Wheelies are a known cause of injury and death for motorcyclists. One young man who had returned from military service was killed when, while trying to pop a wheelie, he flipped his bike. In light of this and other incidents, the new law is hardly surprising and violators will receive a ticket costing them $2,000.

This law follows the one that took effect the previous July which requires all motorcyclists to complete a motorcycle safety course and receive motorcycle endorsement on their licenses by passing a motorcycle knowledge and skills test.

These new laws bear the safety of the motorcyclist in mind and lawmakers hope to prevent injuries and deaths by enforcing them. But thousands of motorcycle accidents occur every year because of other causes, often the negligence of other drivers. With those accidents, personal injury or death often occur.
